Western Power Distribution (WPD) is the electricity distribution network operator for the South West of England, South Wales and the Midlands (a service area of 55,000 square kilometres). We deliver electricity to 7.6 million customers via a network of 216,000kms of overhead line and 184,000 substations and employ 6,000 staff.

We are undertaking a significant programme of capital investment for the regulatory period up to 2015. Although capital spend commitments are yet to be made for the regulatory period 2015-2023, it is anticipated that a high level of activity will prevail.

Our Engineering Design Team prepare designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substations energised at up to 132,000 volts. The team assists network design colleagues with the assessment of substation options and develops selected schemes from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package for delivery via internal and external construction teams.

The team comprises 57 design staff, primarily based at offices in Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol and Cardiff. It handles in excess of 200 active design commissions at any time ranging in capital value from £50k to £5m.

We are currently looking to strengthen our design teams in Birmingham and Nottingham *(although appointment at Bristol or Cardiff Offices may be available for exceptional candidates)

We are seeking to recruit Civil Design Engineers responsible for:

• Outline and detailed design of civil engineering features (primarily substation buildings, foundations, structures, roads and drainage).
• Provision of expert civil/structural engineering advice to WPD and to external bodies.
• Preparation of specifications for tender and construction purposes (either via conventional or design and build contract mechanisms)

Candidates should be qualified to higher national certificate level or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Applicants should ideally have experience of preparing and manipulating engineering drawings using computer-aided design tools (eg AutoCAD). Good communication skills and the ability to manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously are also essential. Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence.
