London Business Waste & Recycling Ltd (LBWR) is recruiting a Commercial Director with extensive experience of selling waste and recycling collections to SMEs. This is a unique opportunity to take a senior role and to shape and to contribute to the success of a new commercial waste business with excellent prospects.

The Business

LBWR is a new venture funded by the London Waste and Recycling Board. We have been set-up to help London Boroughs generate strong growth in their trade waste businesses and to increase the amount of this waste being recycled.

A private company held in public ownership, we have the best of both worlds: we have financial support from a government body and the brand, profile and connections of our Local Government partners; we also have the flexibility and freedom of a small and focused private sector business.

With funding secure, the first of our Council Joint Venture Partners signed-up and more authorities due to sign in coming weeks, we are now ready to start putting in place the team that will deliver the business.

We are therefore recruiting a Commercial Director.


Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will have overall responsibility for all sales.

  • Recruiting, training, incentivising and managing the sales team.
  • Identifying opportunities, bidding for and winning larger accounts.
  • Managing and improving the systems used to manage the sales process.

You will also have wider responsibility.

  • Managing relationships with collection and disposal partners.
  • Contributing to the development of whole businesses strategy.
  • Helping to build and maintain this new company culture

Based in our London Head Office, you will also be responsible for managing teams based in our Council partners’ depots and offices across the capital.


You will have excellent experience of the trade waste business and be able to point to a strong track record in generating growth, both through your own efforts and through the efforts of the teams that you have recruited and managed.

As well as leading teams to sell contracts to single-site SMEs, you will know how to identify opportunities with larger and multi-site accounts and how to bid and win this work.

Finding customers won’t only be down to you and the team. We expect to be able to provide a steady supply of strong leads and you’ll need to be able to show that you are methodical and hard-working to be able to stay on top of this work.

You will understand and may have had practical experience of the operational end of the business and will be comfortable managing relationships with sub-contractors to make sure our sales efforts are matched to our delivery capabilities.

The role offers an opportunity for seniority and strategic responsibility for the whole business, not just the sales team. Whilst we would certainly be interested in candidates who can demonstrate they’ve contributed at this level, we also see this as an opportunity for someone who has a strategic perspective, is able to understand and prioritise the needs of the whole business and is keen to take a step up and the extra responsibility that goes with it.

The Offer

Depending on your experience we will pay up to £70k basic for the right candidate and possibly more for someone exceptional. Performance related bonus. Car allowance and standard benefits.
