Asset Engineer

Up to £33,680 inclusive of car cash allowance

Based Leeds or Gloucester

At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better.

Join us and you can help turn this vision into reality, working as part of a small team of engineers and technicians to maintain, conserve, renew and protect engineering assets and infrastructure across our Yorkshire and North East regions and Wales & South West regions.

About the role

This role allows you to get to grips with a wide range of engineering problems, as you support the delivery of various canal engineering work including inspections, investigations and operational engineering support to the local Regional Operational Team. There will be opportunities for you to work closely with our Asset Strategy team, and to use innovative asset modelling as part of your engineering decision-making. And, of course, you will get to play a key role in ensuring that all our customers are able to enjoy our rivers and canals.

About you

We’re looking for a degree qualified civil engineer with a track record of delivering engineering activities and proven experience of engineering design and construction, ideally in a water environment. You must have a good understanding of historic infrastructure, and will know how to assess infrastructure risk. Other key qualities we look for include strong negotiation and communication skills, including the ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences. A full UK driving licence is essential.

About us
We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
