Role Overview:
We are currently recruiting for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer within our Technical Services team as we grow and strengthen the service. The Technical services team provide technical expertise across the Infrastructure function.
You will be responsible for the design of a number of exciting projects within Galliford Try.

The overall responsibility of the Lead Design Engineer is to ensure successful execution and completion of designs for a number of projects, meeting defined timescales, milestones, quality standards and commercial objectives. This will also involve managing relationship's internal and external and upholding the Galliford Try Values.

The role is for experienced Senior Designers who have the capability to take on greater responsibility. This could also be a developmental role towards an Engineering Manager position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible and accountable for the design outputs of a number of projects and reporting directly to the respective project's Project Manager
  • Ensure successful completion of each project design outputs ~ meeting the design requirements and the design / procurement related commercial objectives of each project
  • Lead, co-ordinate and motivate the design team to meet the design deliverables
  • To ensure all necessary interfaces are maintained and are communicating effectively
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with the clients / partners and other potential ones
  • To work to continuously improve standards of performance and improve efficiency
  • To fully own, lead and co-ordinate the design of a project (including process, mechanical, electrical, civil and CAD). Also to offer design support throughout the project (i.e. feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction and commissioning)
  • To produce a Design Activity Schedule and monitor the design and engineering activity within the schedule; thus ensuring that all the necessary design deliverables are achieved on time
  • Support and maintain good communications with all members of the design and project team
  • To develop best value, robust designs solutions which can withstand external challenge
  • To understand the design risk and assumptions associated with the project and manage this risk. To record the risks and assumptions as the project progresses
  • To ensure that the designers responsibilities under CDM are adhered to by all
  • To promote good H&S practice and minimise risks to operators / maintainers (e.g. designing out confined spaces and working from heights)
  • To understand the environmental issues associated with the design and to manage them through the design process
  • To lead the design staff working on the project (including process, mechanical, electrical and CAD)
  • Ensure the design team are working to the company procedures (i.e. Engineering, CAD and QA procedures)
  • Identify potential improvements to the Galliford Try systems and procedures
  • Identify, propose and test innovative ideas
  • Undertake post project reviews to identify and communicate lessons learnt and best practice
  • To identify opportunities for "additional work" for Galliford Try and support the Engineering Manager on engineering initiatives

Experience and Qualifications:

  • BEng (Hons) Engineering (relevant discipline based) or equivalent
  • City & Guilds - latest edition Electrical Regulations BS7671 (electrical discipline only)
  • To attain the appropriate IEng or CEng accreditation
  • Previous, relevant experience within the Water industry is required for this role


  • Detailed knowledge of the design process, engineering and in particular engineering design
  • Detailed knowledge of their own engineering design discipline (i.e. process, mechanical or electrical). A professional qualification is required (see below)
  • Detailed knowledge of procedures
  • Have a good understanding of the other engineering disciplines within their teams (i.e. process, mechanical, electrical, ICA and CAD)
  • Have a general understanding of project commercial issues and constraints
  • Health, Safety and Environmental systems and procedures
  • To join and be part of an appropriate professional body (e.g. IMechE and IET)
