Role Overview:
Highways is the largest of five business units that make up the Galliford Try Infrastructure Division. It delivers projects for national and local clients.
The team has expanded in recent times and with strong project performance along with successful work winning, we are continuing to build and re-structure the business including operations for Highways England, Local Authorities and Highway Maintenance.

The project that this role is required for is to work on Highways England's flagship Smart Motorways Programme and is being delivered via a joint venture between Galliford Try and Costain. We are improving the 37.9km (23.6 miles) section of the M1 between junctions 13 and 16, which passes through Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and provides connections to the towns of Bedford, Milton Keynes and Northampton. The project will involve upgrading this section to an All-Lane Running (ALR) smart motorway.
The Senior Engineer will assist in the Site Agent in various site management aspects of delivering the project and Supervise the Engineering resource on site to ensure that the necessary Engineering control is in place to support the required construction deliverables.

This project continues building on a successful track record delivering to Highways England adding to our impressive portfolio of Smart Motorway and Major Highway works.

Design Input
Involved in providing construction input to the design including health and safety issues, buildability reviews, technology development and coordination, traffic management constraints and requirements, schedule constraints, auxiliary (third party) works and commissioning and handover requirements. Liaising and engaging with key suppliers to bring innovative construction techniques and efficient designs.
Where appropriate, assisting the Design Partner to produce the Works Information incorporating lessons learnt from other SMP schemes;
Supporting the Design Partner in the production and approval of Approvals in Principle and Departures from Standard developed by the designer. Coordinating with the Delivery Hub to ensure sharing of knowledge, lessons learnt and best practice.
Project Management
Involved in delivering various requirements of the project to facilitate construction including: Applications for Roadside Electricity Connections (Exit Points), Construction Phase Plan, Health & Safety File, Statutory Undertakers Estimate, Handover Schedule, Detailed Local Operating Agreement and Environmental Management Plans
Commence construction readiness planning
Traffic Management
Liaison between any adjacent H.E. schemes and any local authority schemes. CGT will develop Memorandum of Understandings/Detailed Local Operating Arrangements, together with Incident Management Plans with ASC, TOS, NDD and emergency services.
Quality Assurance
Maintain records of contractual information and implement Quality Assurance processes as required by the Joint Venture. Commence Quality Management processes to prepare for construction.
Survey Support
Arrange and coordinate any Surveys to collect information as required by the Design Partner to enable completion of the Project design.

Key Outputs:
Supporting the Site Management to deliver the following outputs:
· Develop the requisite safety systems and initiatives to ensure the delivery phase is successful in its aim.
· Ensure the Client KPI scores that are within the remit of the role are delivered with scores greater than industry average.
· Liaise and interface with other team members to deliver pre-construction activity.
· Drive improvements into the project by identifying and championing opportunities from the wider industry to deliver value for the scheme with respect to Health, Safety, Quality and Cost.
· Daily overview of the production input into design and pre-construction activity
· Weekly input into the management activity to ensure outcomes are planned for and achieved
· Monthly reporting for internal and external reporting and discussion via meetings

Experience and Qualifications:

  • HNC/HND or degree educated in Civil Engineering
  • Experience of working in a major highways project environment
  • Ability to scrutinise design information and provide value adding input to ensure the optimum solutions are developed for the construction phase
  • Self-motivated and ability to set own priorities as well as encouraging others to do the same
  • Able to set clear goals and hold self and others accountable
  • Ability to work with, support and mentor junior Engineers.
