At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better. Now you can play a key role in turning this vision into reality, by delivering the innovative solutions needed to repair a diverse range of national historical assets.

We currently have opportunities for civil engineers across all our regions and at various levels. Join us, as a newly qualified professional, and we’ll make sure you get the experience and exposure you need to work towards accreditation or chartership. You’ll also benefit from the well-recognised ICE training programme and high-quality peer and mentor support.

About the role

Responsible for designing – or managing the design of – repairs, you’ll engage in an extremely wide range of activities. From contributing technical advice during the feasibility phase to preparing briefing documents for our direct labour force. From acting as Principal Designer for works on individual projects to helping to define standards and procedures for the Trust as a whole. And the best part is that, throughout everything you do, you will be working to conserve and enhance our precious waterways for future generations.

About you

We’re looking for qualified engineers with proven experience of engineering design and construction, ideally in a water environment. You’ll have a good understanding of historic infrastructure, and will know how to assess infrastructure risk. Some experience of delivering engineering activities is also essential. Other key qualities we look for include strong negotiation and communication skills, including the ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences.

About us
We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
