Principal Asset Engineer

Up to £47,400 inclusive of car cash allowance

Based Leeds

At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better.

Join us, in this key role within our Asset Improvement team, and you can help turn this vision into reality by delivering an integrated asset management system to improve structures, equipment, resources, habitats and historic sites across our waterways.

About the role

You’ll be responsible for determining our asset investment priorities, implementing our asset strategy, and managing significant infrastructure risk. Other key areas of responsibility will be to ensure all asset inspections are carried out effectively, and that data on all our waterway assets is properly maintained. The role involves leading a small engineering team. It also requires you to liaise with a wide range of people, as you engage with local stakeholders and partners, and provide expert support to the customer service team and Regional Director on all asset-related issues.

About you

We’re looking for a chartered civil engineer or someone with an equivalent professional qualification, who has a proven track record of delivering complex engineering or concepts and excellent knowledge of the various structures on our waterways. There is a major risk management element to the role, so you must have previous experience of assessing infrastructure risk, ideally within a water environment. Other key qualities we are looking for are the ability to negotiate with people inside and outside the business, and to make judgements about conflicting and cross-functional risks.

About us
We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
