Based Wigan or Northwich

At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better. Join us, as we embark on an exciting period of growth, and you can play a key role in turning this vision into reality, as you deliver the innovative solutions needed to repair a diverse range of national historical assets.

About the role

You’ll lead a small team of senior engineers and engineers working on the designs and specifications for a wide range of repair projects. It’s an extremely varied role that will see you doing everything from developing cost-effective construction solutions to managing the supply chain, supporting contractors, and providing expert engineering analysis and advice. You will also act as Lead Engineer and Lead Designer for relevant works. And the best part is that, throughout everything you do, you will be working to conserve and enhance our precious waterways for future generations.

About you

This role calls for a chartered engineer or someone with an equivalent professional qualification, who has a proven track record of delivering complex engineering or concepts and of assessing infrastructure risk. Line management experience is very important, as you’ll need to be able to provide effective leadership to your team, while also motivating, developing and coaching individual team members. Also critical is the ability to negotiate with people inside and outside the business, and to make judgements about conflicting and cross-functional risks.

About us
We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
